Yuen Ren Chao (1892-1982) was a Chinese physicist and linguist. After studying physics and mathematics at Cornell, he earned his doctorate in philosophy at Harvard, and began teaching mathematics at Cornell. In 1920 he returned to China to teach mathematics. An engagement to serve as interpreter to Bertrand Russell during his lecture tour in China rekindled an old interest in Chinese dialects, and prompted a decision to devote himself to the study of Chinese linguistics. For the next five years he studied linguistics in America and Europe, returning to China in 1925 to teach Chinese phonology.
This collection consists of notes taken by Yuen Ren Chao on lectures given by George Sarton at Harvard University in two courses, history of science and history of physics.
