$aThe European Organization for Nuclear Research/Organisation europénne pour la recherche nucléaire, widely known as CERN, was established in Geneva, Switzerland in 1954 to coordinate and perform research on fundamental particles. The member states are Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, West Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
The studies in CERN History Series consist of a collection of preliminary reports which examine the pre-history, founding, and individual member states' early involvement. Minutes of CERN Council sessions (1952-1954) with reports to member states and supplementary agreements which discuss the founding of the organization, and its purpose and course of action. Annual reports (1955-1965) issued for public disclosure of the yearly actions of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Press releases (1954-1972) focus on international policy and research in nuclear physics. Publications include miscellaneous copies of the CERN Courier, the organizational newsletter, and various published studies supported by CERN on nuclear research.
