Marc H. Brodsky served as Executive Director and CEO of the American Institute of Physics (AIP) from 1993 to 2007. This collection consists of files created during Brodsky's tenure, and contain correspondence and meeting materials.

Historical Note

Marc H. Brodsky served as the Executive Director and CEO of the American Institute of Physics (AIP) from 1993 to 2007. During his tenure, Brodsky oversaw dramatic changes in AIP publishing and publishing services, as nearly all editorial, production, distribution and business processes were changed to deal with electronic publishing. All the journals and magazines AIP publishes for itself and others went onto the World Wide Web, increasing access to the physics literature to more people than ever before in history.

Brodsky also worked to increase AIP Member Society participation is programs of common interest. Examples include free Member Society student memberships for Society of Physics Students undergraduates, funding of the Physics Olympiad U.S. Team, and coordination of many media and government relations activities. He also actively defended AIP's freedom of the press rights on many fronts, including attempted government restrictions on the processing of manuscripts from certain countries and suits from some who tried to restrict knowledge from comparisons of journal prices.

Brodsky is a physicist and electronics engineer. Prior to his AIP position, he was at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center for 25 years as a researcher (in semiconductor physics and devices), inventor, manager and executive. He received his bachelor, masters and doctorate degrees in physics from the University of Pennsylvania. He has been an adjunct or visiting faculty or researcher at Columbia University, University of Paris, Dundee University, and the Max Planck Institute (Stuttgart).

He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the IEEE. He has published over 90 technical papers, 30 invention disclosures, edited a book on amorphous semiconductors, and co-edited another. He holds seven U.S. Patents in semiconductor technology and consumer electronics.

Brodsky has provided active leadership in professional and scholarly publishing (PSP) activities, including Chair of the Executive Council of the PSP Division of the American Association of Publishers. He was also on the Board and Executive Committee of CrossRef, the online reference linking service, and the Board of the International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers. Scope and Contents of Collection

Marc H. Brodsky served as Executive Director and CEO of the American Institute of Physics (AIP) from 1993 to 2007. This collection consists primarily of the chronological correspondence books kept by Brodsky's assistants, containing copies of both incoming and outgoing correspondence. The collection also contains meeting files and binders from Executive Committee (including Executive Sessions), Governing Board, and Management Committee meetings. During his tenure, Brodsky oversaw dramatic changes in AIP publishing and publishing services, as publishing transferred many operations to electronic publishing and online access. Brodsky also worked to increase AIP Member Society participation, increased funding of the Physics Olympiad U.S. Team, and coordination of many media and government relations activities. These areas of Brodsky's tenure are likely included as topics in this collection.
