These papers document the career of Isidor Fankuchen, a physicist interested in crystallography and x-ray diffraction who served on the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Harvard Medical School, and the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn.

Isidor Fankuchen received his B.S. from Cooper Union in 1926 and his Ph.D. in physics from Cornell University in 1933. In 1934, Fankuchen worked at the University of Manchester with Sir William Lawrence Bragg, where he used x-ray analysis to detect the presence and determine the structure of the uranyl complex UO2. In 1936, Fankuchen worked with John Desmond Bernal and Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkins at the Crystallography Laboratory in Cambridge on the first x-ray investigations of protein crystals. Additional research at Cambridge focused on plant viruses, using x-ray and optical methods prior to the invention of the electron microscope. Fankuchen continued his work with plant virus preparations at Birkbeck College in London in 1938.
After the start of Word War II, Fankuchen returned to the United States and took teaching positions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Harvard Medical School (1939-1941), and as the Associate Director of the Anderson Institute for Biological Research in Red Wing, Minnesota (1941-1942). In 1942, he earned a second Ph.D. in physics from Cambridge University and accepted a job as Adjunct Professor of Crystal Chemistry at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. In 1946, Fankuchen became Professor of Applied Physics at the Polytechnic Institute, a position he would hold until his death in 1964. His research focused on the crystal structures of organic and inorganic compounds, the calcification and structure of teeth, and the development of an apparatus for low-temperature X-ray analysis.
Fankuchen was instrumental founding the International Union of Crystallography (IUC) in 1945, serving as Chairman of the IUC Apparatus Commission from 1948 until 1951. He was also a founder and the first President of the American Crystallographic Association in 1950. From 1958 to 1959, Fankuchen served as Vice-Chairman of the National Research Council Committee on Crystallography. In 1948, he served as the American Editor of Acta Crystallographica, the international crystallographic journal.
The Isidor Fankuchen Papers extend from 1933 to 1964. Most of the collection is correspondence, both personal and professional, written after 1947. The collection contains substantial correspondence from John Desmond Bernal, George Lindenberg Clark, Ray Pepinsky, Aaron S. Posner, and Dorothy Wrinch. Significant organizational correspondence exists from the American Crystallographic Association, the American Society for X-Ray and Electron Diffraction, the International Union of Crystallography, the National Research Council, and the U.S.A. National Committee on Crystallography.
These papers also include manuscripts, reprints, clippings, lecture notes, research notebooks, date books, x-ray diffraction photographic negatives and prints, specimen samples, and Fankuchen's 1933 Cornell doctoral thesis. Topics such as low-temperature x-ray crystallography and the development of techniques and instrumentation for x-ray diffraction are covered.
