Short description of collection
The Office of the Director is responsible for the general management of the American Institute of Physics (AIP) and its relationships with its various constituencies and the wider physics and technology community. Herczynski held AIP's Physics Management Fellowship and served as assistant to Executive Director Kenneth Ford from 1990-1994. The records document his major contributions, which were organizing the last three of five bilateral conferences with scientists of the U.S. and the former Soviet Union on chaos or nonlinear science; the development and coordination of AIP's programs to donate scientific journals to scientists and institutions in the former Soviet Union and other Eastern European countries; and the coordination of the Corporate Associates meetings and programs.

The Office of the Director is responsible for the general management of the American Institute of Physics and its relationships with its various constituencies including Member Societies, Corporate Associates, and the wider physics and technology community.
Andrzej Herczynski held the American Institute of Physics's Physics Management Fellowship and served as assistant to Executive Director Kenneth Ford from 1990-1994. He is a native of Poland and completed a Master of Science in mathematics at Warsaw University in 1980. He completed a Ph.D. in physics at Lehigh University in 1987 based on the topic, "Eigenfunction Expansion for Problems in Elastodynamics." His research interests lie in analytical modeling in fluid dynamics, kinetic theory, and biophysics. He is fluent in Polish, Russian, French, and English, and competent in German.
Herczynski's expertise in both physics and Eastern European and Russian language and culture made his contribution to the Office of the Director invaluable in the areas of coordinating and maintaining the scientific information flow into and out of the former Soviet Union and Eastern European countries at a critical point in history. His major contributions were in the organization of the last three of five bilateral conferences with scientists of the United States and the former Soviet Union on chaos or nonlinear science from which the publication of the interdisciplinary journal Chaos grew; the development and coordination of AIP's programs to donate scientific journals to the former Soviet Union and other Eastern European scientists and institutions; and the coordination of the Corporate Associates meetings and programs.
Comprised of Herczynski's working files, including correspondence and planning documents for the Chaos conferences (1991, 1992, 1993), the donation of journals to the Former Soviet Union and other science and technical exchange programs, and the Corporate Associates program of the American Institute of Physics. The Chaos conference files also include limited information on the Chaos I and II conferences held prior to Herczynski's tenure.

The records were retained in their original three series: Chaos, Corporate Associates, and Science in the Former Soviet Union, but with minimal reordering to achieve a more consistent subject/chronological order.
The records were received from the Office of the Director upon Dr. Herczynski's departure in September 1994.
Some of the folder titles were changed slightly to more accurately reflect their contents. Duplicates within files were removed. Some exceptionally large files were split to facilitate preservation and handling. The files were removed from their original manilla folders and placed in acid-free folders and archival document cases. Staples, clips, and rubber bands were removed for preservation purposes, and telefaxes were photocopied to acid-free paper and the originals removed from the collection. Photographs were copied for the collection and the originals placed in the photo archives of the Niels Bohr Library. Processed by Sandra Johnson, September 1995.
