Short description of collection
These records document the Office of the Director at the
American Institute of Physics. This position of director was held by Henry A. Barton
from 1931 until 1957. Barton then served as associate director until 1963. The records
consist of correspondence, reports, minutes, and subject files relating to Barton's
professional activities, interests, and responsibilities in those positions.

Henry Askew Barton was born on June 27th, 1898 to Henry Lester and Caroline Askew
Barton. He attended Thurston Preparatory School in Pennsylvania and Detroit University School
in Michigan. In 1915 he entered the University of Michigan as a student of electrical
engineering. The following year he transferred to Princeton University where he received a B.S.
in 1919, and a degree in electrical engineering in 1921.
From 1921 to 1923, Barton worked as an engineer for the American Telephone and
Telegraph Company in the Department of Development and Research. In 1924 he returned to
Princeton for advanced study in physics, receiving his M.A. in 1924 and his Ph.D. in 1925 on
"The Ionization of Argon and Hydrogen Chloride." During the years 1925-1927, he continued to
do research on polyatomic gases as a National Research Council Fellow at Harvard University.
From 1927-1929, he served as a research fellow for the Bartol Research Foundation
Laboratories.
In 1929 Barton was appointed Assistant Professor at Cornell University and remained
there until 1931.
From 1931 to 1957, Barton was the director of the American Institute of Physics and
associate director from 1957 to 1963. The American Institute of Physics is a federation of
member societies including: the American Physical Society, the Optical Society of America, the
Acoustical Society of America, the Society of Rheology, the American Association of Physics
Teachers, the American Crystallographic Society, and the American Astronomical Society, as

Barton's other professional activities included a vice chairmanship of the Division of the
Physical Sciences of the National Research Council in Washington, 1933-1945. He served on
several fellowship boards of the Council. He founded and was the first director of the Office of
Scientific Personnel of the National Research Council. This office now plays on important role
in advising government agencies. During World War II, Barton was consultant to the National
Roster of Scientific and Specialized Personnel in the War Manpower Commission.
After the war, he served on the Advisory Committee on Student Deferment of the
Selective Service System. In 1958 he helped to found and became President of the Scientific
Manpower Commission, a non-government agency established by the major scientific societies
of the United States. He also served as the Secretary of the United States National Committee of
the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics, attending the 8th General Assembly of the
Union in London in 1954 as an appointed delegate of the United States.
Barton was a director of the Princeton Bank and Trust Company; a member of the
University Club, New York; Cosmos Club, Washington; Nassau Club of Princeton; various
scientific societies; Phi Beta Kappa; and Sigma Xi. During World War I, he served briefly in the
U. S. Army and was in training for a commission in heavy artillery when the war ended.
The Barton Collection (mainly correspondence and scientific reports) was transferred
from Barton's office to the AIP Archives on March 3, 1970. The materials are contained in 92
manuscript boxes, occupying 44 linear feet of space. The first part of the collection,
correspondence, was separated into two sections. The first covers the years 1931-1941 and the
second covers the years 1942-1947. This material was filed chronologically and then
alphabetically by subject as far as possible by Barton's secretary. A folder listing was also made
for this material.
The rest of the Barton collection arrived in a rather disorganized state. These folders of
material were reorganized without disturbing the contents of the folders. The correspondence for
the period 1948-1964 was organized in the same manner as the correspondence for 1931-1947.
This material was separated into four sections: 1948-1950, 1951-1952, 1953-1962, 1963-1964.
Following this correspondence is a series of straight chronological correspondence covering the
years 1949-1962. These letters seem to be Barton's copies of letters sent.
The rest of the collection was subdivided into various categories corresponding to
Barton's work for the American Institute of Physics, as well as his activities as a director of the
National Research Council, and his activities in the capacity of a physicist. This series is
arranged by subject and then chronologically within these subject headings. A container list
follows.
