John Hasbrouck Van Vleck was born in Middletown, Connecticut on March 13, 1899. His
father, Edward Burr Van Vleck, was a professor of mathematics at Wesleyan University
and the University of Wisconsin. His mother was Hester Laurence (Raymond) Van Vleck.
Van Vleck earned his B.S. from the University of Wisconsin in 1920 and his M.S. and
Ph.D. at Harvard University in 1921 and 1922, where he did his thesis on quantum
theory under E. C. Kemble. He married Abigail June Pearson in 1927.
After earning his Ph.D. Van Vleck served as an instructor at Harvard for a year. He
then held positions on the faculties of the University of Minnesota and the
University of Wisconsin. In 1934 he returned to Harvard as a professor and remained
there for the rest of his career. From 1951 through 1969 he held the prestigious
Hollis Professorship of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy. While at Harvard he also
headed the theory group at the Radio Research Laboratory, 1943-45, served as the
chairman of the department of physics, 1945-49, and was Harvard's first dean of
engineering and applied physics, 1951-57. He was president of the American Physical
Society from 1952 to 1953.
Van Vleck is known as a pioneer of quantum mechanics. He was one of the first to
teach it, and early in his career did important work on the application and
verification of the new quantum theory and its application to the theory of electric
and magnetic phenomena. This work was partially covered in his 1933 book The Theory
of Electric and Magnetic Susceptibilities. He went on to produce numerous important
papers in a range of fields including molecular and solid- state spectroscopy in the
radio frequency region and relaxation and line-breadth problems. His new methods
helped lay the basis for the quantum theory of solids and of magnetism, in
particular.
In 1977 Van Vleck was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics jointly with Sir Nevill
Mott and Philip Anderson "for their fundamental theoretical investigations of the
electronic structure of magnetic and disordered systems." He also received many
honorary degrees, memberships in honorary societies, medals, prizes and other
honors. Among them are the Case Institute of Technology's Albert A. Michelson Award,
1963, the National Medal of Science of the National Science Foundation, 1966, the
Lorentz Medal of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, 1974, and
memberships in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of
Sciences.
Van Vleck died October 27, 1980 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The collection is largely composed of correspondence, and also includes manuscripts,
reprints, notes, memoranda, clippings, photographs, an audiotape, and other
materials. Correspondence and related materials concern such topics as quantum
theory of solids, meetings on magnetism and ferromagnetism, the 1977 Nobel Prize,
recent history of science, railroads, the Shockley controversy over race and
intelligence, the American Institute of Physics Committee on Mathematical Typography
(1940s), and the National Bureau of Standards battery additive controversy.
Manuscripts include materials for a revision of his 1932 book, The Theory of Electric Susceptibilities, and course
theses written as a graduate student of Percy W. Bridgman (1920-1922). Also included
are speeches, miscellaneous notes and calculations, book reviews, news releases, and
notes taken at Van Vleck's quantum mechanics course (1927-1928). Genealogical and
family materials on the Van Vleck family include correspondence of his grandfather,
John M. Van Vleck (astronomer and mathematician) and his father, Edward B. Van Vleck
(mathematician).
The American Philosophical Society holds Van Vleck materials from the 1920s and 1930s
which were microfilmed as part of the Archives for the History of Quantum
Physics.

About one half of the materials were arranged in two sets of alphabetical files in
Van Vleck's office. This arrangement has been retained and this material now
comprises Series II, General files I, and Series VII, Alphabetical correspondence
files: 1920s-50s. The other materials were in disorder in Van Vleck's office and
home. For the most part folders were not in any perceivable groupings, although some
materials were in labeled folders. Material that was logically foldered together has
been kept together and artificial series have been created.
The researcher using this collection should be aware that there is not necessarily
one logical place for any given document, and that when searching for a specific
item or material pertaining to a particular topic, one should study the finding aid
and explore different possible locations. One should be especially aware that the
folders in Series II, General Files I, cover a wide range of topics and may be
similar to materials in other series. For assistance see the Series II cross
reference list at the end of the finding aid.
This collection also available in microfilm.
Gift of Abigail Van Vleck in 1982.
Because Van Vleck had wanted all of his papers except those that could be
considered official Harvard records to be housed at the American Institute
of Physics' Niels Bohr Library, they were transferred here in 1982. Harvard retained a
small portion of the collection which contains Van Vleck's correspondence
and other records as chairman of the Harvard Physics Department and as Dean
of the Division of Engineering and Applied Physics.
The manuscript of the proposed second edition of The
Theory of Electric and Magnetic Susceptibilities was received
from Brebis Bleaney of Clarendon Laboratory in 1983.
After Van Vleck's death the bulk of papers, which were housed at his office
in the Lyman Laboratory at Harvard and Abigail Van Vleck's apartment, were
transferred to the Harvard University Archives.
This collection was processed by
Marilyn Gisser
in
April 1991.
All of the materials were transferred to archival quality, acid-free folders and
boxes. Folder headings were retained where they existed, with only some minor
modifications for clarity.

Series Descriptions
Boxes 1-2
This small series contains biographical articles, reference book entries,
bibliographic materials, school records from Van Vleck's childhood, and some
financial records. There is also correspondence and other material
pertaining to relatives of Van Vleck and materials reflecting a few of Van
Vleck's nonprofessional interests and activities.
Boxes 3-34
This series, which comprises over half of the collection, has been preserved
in its original arrangement, with only some minor adjustments. It contains
correspondence and other papers arranged alphabetically by correspondent or,
less frequently, subject. The wide range of topics here reflects many
aspects of Van Vleck's career including his teaching, writing, research, and
organizational involvements. Interactions with many scientists and other
individuals and organizations are documented.
Boxes 34-41
This series, which resembles Series II, contains a wide range of
correspondence and other materials which were found throughout the
collection and could not be logically placed in any other series. Much, but
not all, of these papers document Van Vleck's involvement with many
scientific and other organizations, including a number of folders of
materials on his work as chairman of the 1967 International Union of Pure
and Applied Physics' International Conference on Magnetism.
Box 42
This series contains the handful of files headed with scientific subjects
that were scattered throughout the collection. It includes correspondence,
notes, reprints, and manuscripts.
Box 43
This series is comprised of four folders of notes, pictures, and annotated
clippings. The materials are largely scientific. Many are not labeled, but
they seem primarily to be research materials or notes for lectures.
Boxes 43-44
The notebooks in this series are not all clearly identified. Contents include
professional records and scientific notes which may be teaching notes. One
contains notes taken by a student on a course taught by Van Vleck.
Boxes 45-47
The materials in this series are similar to those in Series II. It is not
clear why they were separated since Series II includes materials from this
period.
Boxes 47-48
Most of the letters in this series are carbons of Van Vleck's outgoing
correspondence for selected years from 1966 through 1975.
Box 48
This series documents aspects of Van Vleck's teaching career, primarily at
Harvard. It includes teaching notes, handouts, exams, and class schedules.
Most is arranged by course, some is by topic.
Boxes 49-53
A. Talks
Most of this material is manuscripts and published versions of scientific
speeches by Van Vleck, along with some related clippings and
announcements. There are also manuscripts of chapel sermons Van Vleck
delivered, and there is an audio tape of two speeches Van Vleck made at
meetings of the American Physical Society in 1974 and 1976 (these are
the same as parts of Miscellaneous Tapes 7-76-5 and 7-74-20 and 21).
B. Papers and articles
These are mostly reprints and manuscripts of scientific papers arranged
chronologically. There is some related correspondence and announcements.
There are also some obituaries and book reviews.
C. Books
Drafts of parts of books including chapters of The Theory of Electric and
Magnetic Susceptibilities that Van Vleck was revising for a second
edition at the time of his death.
D. Student papers
Most, if not all, of these papers were written for courses taught by
Percy Williams Bridgman from 1920-22.
Boxes 53-54
This series contains correspondence and other materials documenting Van
Vleck's interactions with the AIP Center for History of Physics (including
his role on the Center advisory committee and plans to document his work),
with Thomas Kuhn, some of which was for the Sources for History of Quantum
Physics project, and other evidence of his personal interest in the history
of physics.
Boxes 54-55
This material documents his receipt of prizes and honorary degrees. About
half the material concerns his receipt of the 1977 Nobel Prize for Physics;
much of that is congratulatory correspondence.
Boxes 56-57
This series is comprised of manuscripts, reprints and miscellaneous published
material which is not by Van Vleck. Most of this is scientific material
arranged by author, but there are some folders of other miscellaneous
printed material including material on Harvard.
Box 58
The notecards are divided into three alphabetical sets of names and addresses
and one with citations of articles arranged by title.
Box 58
Papers from when Van Vleck sat on committees considering faculty appointments
at Harvard. Until 2014 access to these materials requires the permission of
the individuals concerned.
