Wallace ("Wally") Broecker. He and his students made a wide variety of discoveries in oceanography and the chemistry of oceans, past and present, among other subjects. His bold intuition continually spun out ideas — many that were wrong, still more that were right, and some that turned out to be right despite being based on bad data.
