Educated at Queen's College, Belfast and St. John's College Cambridge. Professor of natural philosophy, Queen's Colege Galway 1880-1885. Lecturer in mathematics, University of Cambridge 1885-1903. Lucasian professor of mathematics at Cambridge 1903. F. R. S. 1892. Royal Medal 1915. Copley Medal 1921. Secretary of Royal Society 1901. M. P. for University of Cambridge 1911. He died in 1942.
