Institution of Electrical Engineers records.
Council minutes, minutes of all boards and committees, Annual General Meetings and Special General Meetings; correspondence files; membership application forms dating from 1871; and plans and photographs of the IEE buildings taken at various times.
Incorporated in 1883, and in 1921 was granted a Royal Charter which recognized it as the representative body of electrical engineers in the United Kingdom. The main purposes of the Institution are: to act as a learned society to promote the dissemination of knowledge about electrical science and engineering; to act as a qualifying body conferring membership on those whose qualifications fulfill the requirement of the Bylaws of the Institution; and to serve as a regulating body for the profession of electrical engineering, instituting, and requiring members to observe a code of conduct as set out in the Bylaws. The three main purposes lead, in turn, to many contributory activities including setting standards of electrical engineering education and giving advice and assistance to those entering the profession. Another important duty is the preparation and issue of technical regulations for electrical equipment.
