Educated at the CollĒ§e Sainte Barbe in Paris and then entered his father's printing firm. He studied chemistry, physics, and mechanics and was one of the first to use electrotyping. He invented the first envelope-making machine. He formed a close friendship at the College of Chemistry with August W. Hofmann (F. R. S. 1851) and carried out research on cochineal with him. He also took up astronomy and erected a small observatory at Canonbury and did much to develop celestial photography. He devised the Kew heliograph and studied sunspots. He also carried out chemical researches. F. R. S. 1850. Royal Medal 1864.
