Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, B. A., 1848, as 36th Wrangler. He took up astronomy and was observer in the Durham University Observatory, 1849-1852. F. R. A. S., 1851. In 1853, he built a private observatory at Reigate, Surrey, and carried out much astronomical work on mapping stars and sun spots. Later he built another observatory at Churt, Surrey. F. R. S., 1860.
