Physicist and physical chemist; Fellow of the Royal Society. Lord Berkeley worked in the chemical laboratories of Oxford University, but did not study for a degree. He then established a private laboratory at his house, Foxcombe Hall, at Boars Hill, near Oxford. His special interests were thermodynamics and osmotic pressure; he also studied the physics of the game of golf. His laboratory closed in 1928 (when some of its equipment and papers passed to the Balliol-Trinity physical chemistry laboratories.
