Armagh Observatory
Armagh Observatory records, circa 1790-1916.
Letters and correspondence; legal documents and deeds; reports; minutes; account books, diagrams; and notebooks of astronomical observations. The records comprise the surviving archives of the Observatory from its founding in 1790 until John Louis Emil Dreyer resigned as director in 1916. Topics include administration, staffing, and financing the observatory; astronomical instruments at Armagh; construction of the Newry and Armagh railway; the Observatory buildings, grounds and services; astronomical observations and related matters; meteorology and related matters. Collection includes papers of the Rev. James Archibald Hamilton, the first director, 1790-1815; Thomas Romney Robinson, 1823-1882; and Dreyer, 1882-1916. The collection also includes astronomical drawings of lunar craters and other subjects from Lord Rosse's Observatory, Birr Castle, Ireland.
Armagh Observatory was founded in 1790 in the historic Irish city of Armagh on the initiative of Archbiship Richard Robinson, who endowed it and appointed a board of Governors and Guardians, many of whom (and are) members of the Chapter of Armagh Cathedral. It was established by an Act of Parliament in 1790 and therefore permanent in status.
