Andre-Marie Ampere papers, 1821-1822.
Collection contains three letters, written in French and dated 15 Aug. 1821, 12 Oct. 1821 and 12 Apr. 1822 from Ampere to Dutch scientist Speyert Van der Eyk, concerning Ampere's experiments on magnetism. Also contains one letter, written in Dutch and dated 25 May 1822 from Van der Eyk to Ampere, concering the origins of electricity. There are English translations of all four letters. Ampere's letters were published in the July 1932 issue of ISIS.
Andre-Marie Ampere, 1775-1836, was a French physicist and applied mathematician who studied the relationship of electricity and magnetism and helped establish the science of electrodynamics. The ampere, the unit of electric current, was named for him.
