Collection consists mainly of material (memoranda, correspondence, research reports, committee papers) documenting various aspects of the history and development of the laboratory, and includes a set of 'Instrument Information Bulletin,' 1956-1962. There are also some personal materials, lectures, and other writings and a little correspondence.
Young was an engineer, educated at Oxford, who joined Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd. in 1940. In 1946 he became the first Director of the Central Instrument Section (later the Central Instrument Research Laboratory) of the Company where he pioneered instrumentation and process control systems. He was President of the Institute of Measurement and Control, 1954-1957, and elected to the Royal Society in 1972.
