United States Naval Observatory.
United States Naval Observatory records, 1830-1900.
Official correspondence and administrative records of offices of the observatory including that of the superintendent, Nautical Almanac Office, Librarian and the Superintendent of Compasses and Instruments, concerning various activities of the Observatory and tracing its development from its origin in the Depot of Charts and Instruments, U.S. Navy Department. Principal topics include acquisition, maintenance, testing, and distribution of instruments and charts, distribution of observatory publications, eclipse expeditions of 1860, 1869, and 1878, Centennial Exhibition of 1876, astronomical observations and computations, and experiments to measure the velocity of light. Includes correspondence of Matthew Fontaine Maury (1806-1873), Superintendent (1842-55, 1858-61), with ship captains who collected data on ocean winds and currents from which navigation charts were assembled. Maury's correspondence with George Manning reflects his interest in Atlantic soundings, and Atlantic telegraph cable, trade on the Amazon and other South American rivers, and an expedition to the Arctic by Henry Grinnell. Correspondents of the Nautical Almanac Office include W. L. Elkin, William Ferrel, Asaph Hall, Joseph Henry, Edward S. Holden, Albert A. Michelson, Maria Mitchell, C. H. F. Peters, Edward C. Pickering, T. H. Safford, Ormond Stone, David Todd, Alexander Twining, and C. A. Young.
