Samuel Tolansky papers and correspondence, 1926-1974.
The collection covers all aspects of Tolansky's activities and interests, including biographical material, a section on Tolansky's Department at Royal Holloway College, many notebooks, 1935-1969, many manuscripts and drafts for publications, reviews, broadcast talks (some additional to those listed inthe offical bibliography of the Royal Society memoir). There is material relating to Tolansky's service on many committees, advisory bodies, etc. and to conferences, demonstrations and exhibitions. There is extensive correspondence with professional colleagues, instrument manufacturers, industrial firms, publishing houses, and many members of the general public via his popular writings, children's lectures, and radio and television programs.
Physicist (surface structure, interferometry). Educated at Durham University; Lecturer, later Reader, at Manchester University; Professor of Physics, Royal Holloway College, London University (1947-1973). His research concentrated on interferometry, diamond physics, and lunar dust. He wrote, lectured, and broadcast prolifically, and undertook much examining work at London University and many other universities in Britain and overseas.
