Harlow Shapley papers, 1906-1966.
Contains correspondence and manuscripts of Shapley's writings concerning his scientific interests and activities, diaries, research notebooks, speeches and articles, and biographical and genealogical material. Major subjects of material includes eclipses, galaxies, astronomical dating of the earth, and weather conditions. Also reflects Shapley's political concerns, such as the American Committee for Emigr ̌Scholars, Writers and Artists, the Program for Russian-American Amity and science bills in Congress; and some letters about Harvard appointment and related matters. Shapley was director of the Harvard College Observatory and taught astronomy at Harvard.
