The Marcel Schein Papers relate mostly to his research on cosmic rays. Material in Series I deals primarily with a project to study cosmic rays jointly sponsored by the Office of Naval Research and the Atomic Energy Commission. The primary purpose was to explore high energy phenomena occurring in cosmic radiation. The collection is made up of a small amount of correspondence, original drafts of Scheins articles, mimeographed versions and reprints of these articles, and photographs of apparatus, diagrams and other material used in his research. Also included (Box 1, Folders 11-12) are reports of the work in progress at the University of Chicago. The collection also contains some handwritten notes, apparently Scheins research notes, and a report and photographs on the advisability of making cosmic ray tests on Mt. McKinley, Alaska. Series II is an addenda to the collection, transferred to the University of Chicago by American Institute of Physics. It includes notes and manuscripts, photographs documenting research in progress and film of experimental balloon flights.
