Richardson, O. W. (Owen Willans), 1879-1959.
O. W. Richardson papers, 1897-1959 (bulk 1920-1940).
The Richardson collection is comprised of Richardson's holograph manuscripts, typescripts, galley proofs, notebooks, correspondence, photographs, and clippings, as well as correspondence and works of many of his colleagues, and reports, notices, minutes of meetings, and other papers of various scientific organizations from 1897 to 1959. Manuscripts and correspondence total approximately 25,000 items. Richardson's notes, holograph manuscripts, typescripts, and galley proofs of The Electron Theory of Matter (1914), The Emission of Electricity from Hot Bodies (1916), and Molecular Hydrogen and Its Spectrum (1934) are present. Other noteworthy manuscripts include "Metallic Conduction," "The Continuation of Bhawalkar's Experiments," "The Fine Structure of the Spectral Lines," and Richardson's Nobel lecture, "Thermionics Phenomena and the Laws Which Govern Them." Richardson's experimental notebooks, scientific papers, research notes, graphs, and pamphlets are also represented. In addition to Richardson's works are manuscripts by his colleagues. Many of the papers are accompanied by graphs, charts, and blueprints. Also present are theses submitted by Kusumeshu Das, M. A. El-Sherbini, Irena Gimpel, Otto Hahn, Alice Leigh-Smith, Seyuan Shu, and others.
Drafts of letters from Richardson to approximately 600 correspondents and letters written to Richardson from about 3500 correspondents are included in the collection. Richardson and his colleagues often exchanged papers for comment, and many of the letters contain manuscript enclosures. Among the correspondence are 350 letters of congratulation on the occasions of Richardson's Nobel Prize award in 1928 and knighthood in 1939. Scientific correspondence dates primarily from 1920 to 1938 and includes numerous letters to and from E. V. Appleton, Niels Bohr, William Henry Bragg, Percy Maurice Davidson, James Hopwood Jeans, L. S. Lloyd, A. M. Mosharrafa, A. A. Newbold, Ernest Rutherford, and many others. Much of the correspondence discusses the work of other scientists, such as Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, and J. J. Thomson.
Items cataloged as miscellaneous are Richardson's non-scientific works, including poetry; works by his colleagues, such as Ernest Rutherford's "Report on the Structure of an Atom" and J. M. Drinkwater's "An Objective Determination of the Visibility Curves of a Michelson Interferometer;" correspondence between Richardson's colleagues; Lilian Maud Richardson's correspondence; patent specifications and applications, not only by Richardson but also by such scientists as J. A. Fleming and Irving Langmuir; lecture notes; lists; inventories of apparatus; physics exams; and papers of the Board of Scientific Societies, the Faraday Society, the National Physical Laboratory, the Radio Research Board, the Royal Society, and other organizations. Biographical sketches, obituaries, and testimonials provide information about Richardson's colleagues.
English physicist who pioneered the field of thermionics; also known for his work on photoelectricity, spectroscopy, ultraviolet and X-ray radiation, the electron theory, and quantum theory. Awarded the 1928 Nobel Prize for physics for his work in thermionics and for his discovery of Richardson's Law.
