Henry Fitz, Jr., papers, 1839-1960.
Papers of Henry Fitz, Jr. include bills, receipts, accounts, freight records, business correspondence (1849-1863) some in German and French. Photographs include copies of daguerreotypes taken by Fitz (1839-1844), with self portraits, pictures of his mother and sister, scenes of Baltimore, c. 1840, photographs taken at West Point, 1862, and pictures of telescopes built by Fitz. Also, articles about him, and copies of accession records and correspondence with the Smithsonian Institution regarding the donation of the Fitz Collection to the Institution (1937-1957). Papers of Henry G. Fitz include account books, notebooks, sketchbooks, manuscript and typescript articles on astronomy, drawing, teaching methods, and manual training schools; also correspondence with the Smithsonian and other scientific institutions about Fitz's studies in astronomy and biology, and detailed weather observations kept by Fitz in Southold, 1882 and 1929-1933. There is also an article on Benjamin Rutherford Fitz, and sketches and photos of artist's models, 1855-1891.
Henry Fitz, Jr. was a pioneer photographer and the first commercial telescope maker in the United States. His workshop and tools are on display at the Smithsonian Institution. His son Henry G. Fitz (1847-1939) continued the telescope business for some time, and later taught drawing at the Harlem Evening High School for Men in New York City. Another son, Benjamin Rutherford Fitz was a painter.
