Commission de la df̌ense nationale, 1914-1919.
Contains the articles, notes, reports, etc. examined by the Commission, proceedings of the meetings of the Physics and Chemistry Commissions (1915-1916), correspondence with the French Government and with the Allies (esp. Italy), and some studies undertaken by members of different Commissions. The physicists involved include: Amagat, Paul Appel, Arsn̈e d'Arsonval, G. Bigourdan, Andr ̌Blondel, Valentin Boussinesq, Edouard Branly, Georges Claude, Gaston Darboux, Henri Deslandres, Jacques Hadamard, Lallemand, Gabriel Lippmann, Paul Painlev,̌ Emile Picard, Victor Puiseux, and many more. Topics include: ballistics, chemical warfare (aggressive and protective), artillery spotting by means of sound, optics, spectroscopic analysis of flames produced by enemy explosions, submarine warfare, air warfare and aviation, means of destruction of barbed wire, etc.
The Commission de la df̌ense nationale de l'Acadm̌ie des Sciences was created in 1914 in order to give an impluse to scientific research of interest to the war effort, and to examine proposition submitted by the Ministry of War. It was divided in several subcommissions : in 1914, Mechanics (including Aviation), Wireless Telegraphy, Radiography, Chemistry (including Explosives), Medicine, Surgery, Hygiene, and Nutrition; in 1915 : Mechanics, Physics, Chemistry and Health.
