The director's files of Smith date only up through 1953 and consist primarily of correspondence with some reports, contracts, manuscripts. Rear Admiral Edward Hanson Smith, (1889-1961), United States Coast Guard, retired, became the third Director of the Woods Hold Oceanographic Institution on July 1, 1950. He was a graduate of the Coast Guard Academy at New London, Connecticut in 1913.
