Correspondence, memoranda, reports, minutes of meetings, speeches and press releases, appointment books, clippings, photographs, and printed matter concerning Strauss' business affairs (1919-39), personal life, friendship with Herbert Hoover, Republican political activities, military service in World War II, tenure on the Atomic Energy Commission, and his services as Secretary of Commerce, 1958-59.
Strauss, Lewis Lichtenstein (1895-1974). Secretary to Herbert Hoover, 1917-19; investment banker with Kuhn, Loeb and Company, 1919-45; member and chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, 1946-50 and 1953-58; close friend of Herbert Hoover, 1917-64. Hoover's enthusiastic recommendation led to Strauss' hiring by the highly prestigous international banking firm Kuhn Loeb. By 1929 Strauss had been elevated to a junior partnership and by the middle 1930's had become one of the firms' most respected senior partners.
Strauss' experience in industrial finance and management were put to ggood use during his World War II service in the Navy Department. His tal
Events and experience soon brought him to the attention of Frank Knox, the Secretary of the Navy, and Undersecretary James V. Forrestal who utilized his services as their advisor. Strauss' service as the Navy's representative on an interservice committee on the future role of atomic energy eventually led to his appointment by President Truman as one of the commissioners of the new Atomic Energy Commission.
