Polanyi, Michael, 1891-1976
Michael Polanyi papers, 1900-1975.
Collection contains correspondence, notes, manuscripts, and memorabilia, but Polanyi's scientific work is well documented only in the correspondence series. There is significant scientific correspondence (1920-1933) when he was in Berlin and (1933-1948) when he was at the University of Manchester. Correspondents include Fritz Haber, Georg Bredig, Kasimir Fajans, Herbert Freundlich, James Franck, Otto Hahn, Werner Heisenberg, Wilfred Heller, Leo Szilard, Eugene Wigner, William Henry Bragg, William Lawrence Bragg, Arthur Allmand, Patrick Blackett, Christopher Ingold, Cyril Hinshelwood, Eric Rideal, Max Born, Erwin Schrd̲inger, and Juro Horiuchi, During and after World War II, Polanyi turned increasingly away from science to economics and philosophy and his correspondence with scientists dropped off.
Major affiliations include: Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut f r Physikalische Chemie, Berlin, Germany, 1922-1933; University of Manchester, Manchester, England, UK, 1933-1958; and University of Oxford, Oxford, England, UK, 1959-1961.
