Joy, Alfred H. (Alfred Harrison), 1882-1973.
Alfred H. Joy papers, 1910-1972.
The collection includes correspondence and manuscripts from Alfred H. Joy's years as astronomer and secretary at the Mt. Wilson Observatory (1915-1948) and his retirement years when he worked a great deal with the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (1948-1972). Of particular interest are two volumes of notes taken by Joy from his classes with Henry Norris Russell in 1910.
M.A., Oberlin College. Instructor at the American University of Beirut, where he photographed Halleys Comet in 1910; conducted research at Yerkes Observatory and at Princeton (under Henry Norris Russell); joined the staff of Mt. Wilson Observatory in 1915, where he remained active for nearly sixty years (although he officially retired in 1948).. After early solar work with G.E. Hales team, Joy applied Walter S. Adamss method of spectroscopic parallax to determine the distances of thousands of stars. Joy specialized in the spectroscopy of variable stars and the spectra of comets and novae; he invented the classification of T Tauri stars; and he edited the popular Leaflets of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific from 1945 to 1968.
