Margaret Harwood papers, 1902-1974.
The collection consists of Harwood's personal and professional correspondence, family papers, and correspondence and papers concerning the Bibliography of Astronomical Literature, 1881-1898, a project of the International Astronomical Union. Also included are photographs of Harwood, her family, her trips, and of conferences, observatories, and telescopes. There is some printed material concerning the history of Nantucket and of astronomy. Includes references to the following persons: Cecilia Helena Payne Gaposchkin, Lillian Moller Gilbreth, Marion Green, Emelie Green Harwood, Johathan Harwood, Margaret Harwood, John Heath, Alvin Egan Paddock, Arthur Searle, Edouard S. Stackpole, William Herbert Steavenson, F. Stratton, and Reginald Waterfield; and institutions: American Astronomical Society; International Astronomical Union; Maria Mitchell Observatory; Radcliffe College; and the Royal Astronomical Society.
Astronomer (Radcliffe, A.B., 1907, University of California, A.M., 1916), Harwood directed the Nantucket Maria Mitchell Observatory (1916-1957). Her particular field was photometry, measuring variation in the light of stars and asteroids, especially that of the small planet Eros. A member of the American Astronomical Society and Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, Harwood corresponded with fellow astronomers and traveled widely in Europe and the United States. She also did volunteer work on Nantucket.
