Begun, Semi Joseph, 1905-1995
Semi Joseph Begun papers, circa 1970-1990.
Documents the later life of Begun, specifically, the Society for the Preservation of Violence and Aggression in Children (SPV), a non-profit organization created by the Beguns in 1983; Begun's corporate responsibilities at Auctor Associates, Inc., a management consulting firm; and the case of Weltman v. Frosch, a gender discrimination case involving NASA in the 1970s.
A pioneer in magnetic recording, Begun designed the first magnetic tape recorder for use by the German Broadcasting System before emigrating to the United States in 1935. In 1938, Begun joined the Brush Development Company, where he received many patents for various aspects of magnetic recording. During WW II, Begun served as a member of the National Defense Research Committee. After the war, he returned to the Brush Development Company, stayed with it into its successor, the Clevite Corporation, finally retiring from its successor, the Gould, Incorporated. In 1970 Begun established Auctor Associates, Inc., a management consulting firm.
