Draper, Henry, 1837-1882.
Henry Draper photograph and photonegative collection, 1863-1881.
The 34 lunar photographs (1863-64) illustrate Draper's earliest program of celestial photography. The stellar spectra series includes eleven slit spectra of the moon, Jupiter, Vega, Arcturus and Antares (1879-81) and eight plates of objective prism spectra including the Pleiades and Hyades region. The solar spectra series includes 33 plates taken for the investigation of oxygen lines in the solar spectrum. Although later studies did not substantiate Draper's claim that he had found emission lines of oxygen in the photospheric spectrum, it posed a problem that was much discussed for twenty years and contemporary astrophysicists considered this investigation a crucially important piece of research. Also included are 2 copies of a photograph of the corona of the solar eclipse, July 29, 1878 taken at Battle Lake, Wyoming. The Harvard College Observatory material include nine plates sent to Mrs. Draper after her husband's death including views of the Harvard Observatory, the Pleiades, the Orian nebula, spectra of six first-magnitude stars, spectra of Beta Persei at full brightness and at minimum and of three other stars and the globular cluster Omega Centauri. Some miscellaneous personal memorabilia include stereoscopic New York cityscapes, group pictures and an unidentified building with colonades.
Henry Draper was professor of chemistry and physiology at New York University (1866-1882). He is best known for his pioneering work in astronomy, astronomical photography and stellar spectroscopy. He organized the photographic work of the government expedition to observe the solar ecipise in Wyoming in 1878.
