Daniel Hering papers, 1889-1939.
The Hering Collection cointains bound volumes of clippings and reprints of his articles, typewritten annals of NYU's College of Engineering, and biographical essays on some of the University's professors. The collection also includes mimeographed brochures on the James Arthur Collection, travel books, and a typescript memoir illustrated with original photographs. The memoir contains images which document Hering's work in Roentgenology, University buildings, laboratories and personnel, the Hering family, and the James Arthur Clock Collection.
Daniel Webster Hering (1850-1938). Born in Smithburg, Maryland, he obtained a Maryland teaching certificate at the age of eleven. He earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees in civil engineering from Yale University. Following a period of employment as a railroad civil engineer, Hering turned to teaching. He taught at Western Maryland College and the University of Pittsburgh before becoming professor of physics at New York University in 1885. Among his noteworthy scientific endeavors was early work in Rotentgen x-rays. Hering took what may be the first radiograph of the entire human body. He was dean of the Graduate School at NYU from 1902-1916. In 1926 the Council of NYU applinted him curator of the James Arthur Collection of Clocks and Watches. He died in 1938.
