Bray, Martha Coleman.
Martha and Edmund Bray research files, 1960-1980.
Correspondence, research notes, published materials, and related files gathered by Martha C. and Edmund C. Bray relating to French explorer and scientist Joseph N. Nicollet, whose explorations (1836-1839) of the Upper Mississippi and St. Croix river regions revealed much information on the geographical, topographical, geological, and botanical features of the region and on Indian life in the area. His journals were edited and translated by the Brays and published by the Minnesota Historical Society (1970 and 1976).
The files also contain copies of Nicollet correspondence (1832-1843), including correspondence with English astronomers John F. W. Herschel (1821-1830) and Edward Sabine (1822-1829). The unedited manuscript of Joseph N. Nicollet and his Map, which contains more information than the published version, is also included.
