In addition to the files of deceased members of the Academy, includes files of the National Research Council; Science Advisory Board; papers of various international unions including the International Council of Scientific Unions, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics, International Astronomical Union, International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics; papers of international scientific programs for which the Academy was the U.S. participant such as the International Geophysical Year, the International years of the Quiet Sun, the International Indian Ocean Expedition, the Global Atmospheric Research Program; papers of the activities that grew out of the Internationall Geophysical Year such as the Committee on Atmospheric Sciences, the Committee on Polar Research, the Geophysics Research Board, the Space Science Board, and the Committee on Oceanography, as well as papers of the American Geophysical Union (1919-1972); papera of the Committee on the Physics of the Earth (1926-1942); the Committee on Nuclear Science (1947-1978); papers of the various radiation committees; papers of the disciplinary surveys in the fields of astronomy, chemistry, and physics (the "Bromley Report," "Greenstein Report," and the papers of the panels advisory to the National Bureau of Standards.
The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) was established by an act of Congress in 1863 as a private, honorific institution charged with providing independent advice on science and technology to the federal government. The NAS established the National Research Council (NRC) in 1916 in anticipation of the need for wartime advice.
