Winch discusses his family life and his parents' and teachers' influence on his interest in science; his attendance at Milton College in Wisconsin where he majored in mathematics under Alfred Edward Whitford and studied physics under Carroll F. Oakley; graduate work at the University of Wisconsin under John Ransom Roebuck and Charles Mendenhall with fellow students Leland J. Haworth, G. Norris Glasoe, Myrl N. Davis, Alvin B.Cardwell, Winston Hole, Glenn W. Gidding, Miles Martin, John H.Dillon, Albert E. Whitford and Lloyd Morris; reminiscences of Thomas C. Mendenhall and Robert H. Fowler who was visiting professor at Wisconsin during Winch's studies there; his association with John H. Van Vleck and his doctoral work under Van Vleck; Winch's first post-doctoral teaching postion at Williams College and the difficulty of finding work during the Depression; his colleagues at Williams--Willis E. McElfresh, Howard P. Stabler, Justin Glathart, and James B. Brinsmade; his temporary teaching post at Princeton during World War II and teaching Naval cadets at Williams also during the war; his research projects and teaching at Williams following the war; work in the American Association of Physics Teachers beginning in the early 1950s; work in building and developing new science facilities for Williams; and his teaching activities and philosophy.
