Smith describes his early childhood and education; his attendance at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, PA, during the Depression, where he studied mathematics under William E. Cleland and Wallace W. McCormick; his master's work in physics at Syracuse University under William Fredrickson and Royal Porter; his teaching appointment at Geneva College; his move to the University of Michigan as a Ph.D. student under Harrison Randall, George Uhlenbeck, Otto Laporte, Richard Crane, Samuel Goudsmit, James Cork, Ralph Sawyer, O. Stanley Duffendack, Floyd A. Firestone, and William Colby; his work with the 39" cyclotron; and his employment in the physics laboratory at Corning Glass Works under Jesse Littleton and Howard Lillie.
