Fischer, Irene.
Irene Fischer response to History of Geophysics Survey, 1988.
File contains a copy of an unpublished memoir entitled: What's That? My Personal Involvement in the Age-Old Quest for the Size and Shape of the Earth, With a Running Commentary on Life in a Government Research Office. The memoir is concerned almost exclusively with her research and colleagues but is nonetheless primarily a personal account of life and work in the Department of Geodesy of the U.S. Defense Mapping Agency, documenting the times and people in wittily written descriptions.
Mathematician, was born and educated in Vienna, Austria, and taught there before she and her husband Eric, a geographer, emigrated to the United States after the Anschluss. In the 1950s, to help support her daughter in college, Fischer began to work for the Army Map Service, where she was part of a geodetic project to study the shape of the earth. She remained in government service for 25 years. She was also the author of an advanced geometry text for high schools.
