Cameron, A. G. W. (Alastair Graham Walter), 1925-
A. G. W. Cameron response to 1988 History of Nuclear Physics Survey, 1985.
A 31-page autobiographical sketch, originally published in Cosmogonical Problems, (W. D. Arnett, C. J. Hansen, J. W. Truran, and S. Tsuruta, eds. Utrecht: VNN Science Press, 1986). The sketch covers Cameron's undergraduate work at the University of Manitoba during the final years of World War I; Ph.D. work at the University of Saskatchewan with Leon Katz; the time between the two degrees spent working at Chalk River on the atomic energy project of the National Research Council of Canada; his assistant professorship at Iowa State College and his interest in applying nuclear physics to astrophysical problems; his return to and tenure at Chalk River; his immigration to the United States and work with Jesse Greenstein, Walter Baade, Fritz Zwicky, and Rudolph Minkowsky at the California Institute of Technology and at the Goddard Institute for Space Studies at Yale University; his move to the Belfer Graduate School of Science of Yeshiva University and his students there and at Yale; his acceptance of a position at Harvard University as Associate Director for Planetary Sciences at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and, later, as head of Harvard's Astronomy Department, through 1985. Throughout, Cameron discusses his work in some technical detail, with references. File also includes a bibliography, questionnaire, and curriculum vitae.
