The autobiography describes the early influences on Bennett's scientific career; his decision to go into optics; work in the Michelson Laboratories, conditions and research; and concentration on optical properties of strongly absorbing solids. Bennett also comments on his marriage to fellow physicist Jean L. McPherson and the advantages of their working together, both for the marriage and research; on women in physics; important influences on research, working conditions, equipment, colleagues; approaches to problem solving; involvement in professional societies and science education; and his hobbies and non-scientific activities.
