Mackintosh, Allan R.
Allan R. Mackintosh papers, 1966-1995.
Material comprises Mackintosh's scientific and administrative correspondence during the period 1966-1994. Also, one box contains photocopies of personal material retained by his widow, Jette Mackintosh. The scientific correspondence includes approximately 1300 correspondents. Administrative correspondence includes applications, references, prizes, evaluations, etc. The personal material is primarily newspaper clippings, mostly on the public debate on nuclear power stations in Denmark and related subjects in which Mackintosh took part with articles, letters, and interviews. Also includes copies of documents regarding membership in the Danish Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society, London, and several manuscripts including an English manuscript for "Sa lig hinanden og dog sa forskellige" (So alike and yet so different), a comparison between the English and the Danish people, March 1981.
Mackintosh (1936-1995). Educated at the University of Cambridge, England, but spent his career as a mature scientist in Denmark, where he introduced modern solid state physics as a full-fledged field of research. As a researcher he made important contributions, particularly to the understanding of the electrical and magnetic properties of the rare earths. He was also instrumental in promoting European cooperation in physics, and as director of the Danish Atomic Energy Research Establishment from 1971 to 1976, he was a major force in Danish science policy and a prolific contributor to the public debate about nuclear power.
