Correspondence from the period of his professorship of physics at the University of Virginia. Among the subjects covered are the NSF and the construction of a new chemistry building and a nuclear physics lab. He became president there in 1975.

Professional experience includes: Bartol Research Foundation at Swarthmore College (1947-1949); associate professor of physics, professor, dean of the graduate school of arts and sciences, Robert C. Taylor professor of physics, provost, vice president, president, University of Virginia (1949-); visiting professor, University of St. Andrews, Scotland (1971-1972).
