Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. Southwest Meteor Spectral Patrol.
Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory Southwest Meteor Spectral Patrol records, 1968-1972.
This record unit contains material documenting the administrative and scientific work of SWMSP and includes budget and other fiscal records; project reports; correspondence and memoranda, mostly concerning the termination of SWMSP in 1972 and spectral data gathered during observations.
The Southwest Meteor Spectral Patrol (SWMSP) was a meteor observing program carried out by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) to obtain spectral data during meteor showers. Funded under a National Aeronautics and Space Administration contract, SWMSP made observations at SAO's Organ Pass, New Mexico, and Wallops Island, Virginia, stations from 1968 through 1972. Claude Linton directed SWMSP from August to November 1968. Roy Proctor replaced Linton in November 1968 and remained in charge of the project until its termination in 1972.
