These records document the administration and scientific programs of Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) under the leadership of George Field (1973-1983) and Irwin Shapiro (1983-1987). The records consist of material documenting research activities in atomic and molecular physics, high energy astrophysics, optical and infrared astronomy, solar physics, and theoretical physics. Other topics include, among others: the Multiple-Mirror Telescope; Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory; research programs in masers and infrared telescopes; relations with Harvard University; and the proposed Institute for X-Ray Astronomy at SAO.
Fred Lawrence Whipple retired as Director of SAO in 1973 and was succeeded by George B. Field, who served in the position until 1983. Irwin I. Shapiro was appointed Director in January 1983.
