John M. Poor papers, circa 1903-1933.
Collection includes personal and professional correspondence of the Dartmouth College professor, John M. Poor. Letters refer to his work as a professor in the Dept. of Astronomy, his work at the Shattuck Observatory at Dartmouth College, his observations of weather, and the kinds of equipment he used. Collection also includes records of meteorological observations made at Shattuck Observatory, account books for Shattuck Observatory, and his essay entitled Winter weather records at Hanover, N.H.
Poor was born in Newbury, Mass. in 1871. He was graduated from Dartmouth College in 1897, receiving his PhD from Princeton University in 1904. He taught at Dartmouth College as an instructor of math and astronomy, 1898-1900, and as an instructor of astronomy, 1902-1906. He became an assistant professor of astronomy in 1906, an associate professor in 1915, and a full professor in 1917. He also taught evolution at Dartmouth College, 1920-1932.
