E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. Atomic Energy Division.
E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Company Atomic Energy Division Savannah River Project administrative records, 1953-1989.
The Savannah River Project administrative files are divided into four subseries. The Contract file documents the original discussions between the Du Pont Company and the Atomic Energy Commission and the various changes in the contract that were negotiated between 1953 and 1983. The chronological file of the Manufacturing Division (1960-1987) contains the correspondence of the various division directors who served between 1960 and 1987. These records describe the original geological survey of the site, reactor staffing issues, the manufacturing process, safety procedures, personnel policy and waste disposal. The administrative policy correspondence (1950-1985) includes records documenting the decision to locate the site of this nuclear facility near Aiken, the initial organization of the Du Pont Company's Atomic Energy Division, a 1955 study of the economic impact of the plant on the communities near Savannah River, radiation reports, reports on environmental radioactivity, and health protection procedures. The reports, statements, and publications include monthly reports of the Explosives Department relating to the Atomic Energy Division (1956-1959), monthly progress reports of the Works Technical Division (containing statements about construction, production, and testing), design reports (1957) and a 1980 proposal to create a Defense Waste Processing Facility.
Du Pont's Atomic Energy Division built and operated the Savannah River Plant near Aiken, S.C., which manufactured plutonium and tritium for the U.S. nuclear program. The plant was designed and built between 1949 and 1955 and was operated by Du Pont until March 31, 1989, when it was turned over to the Westinghouse Corporation. A more complete history may be found under the main entry (DEHV91-A238).
