Smyth, Henry De Wolf, 1898-1986
Atomic energy for military purposes, 1945 [typescript].
The report was first issued in a small typescript edition reproduced by lithoprint. This copy was presented by Gen. Groves to Crawford H. Greenewalt, who served as the Du Pont Company's liaison on the Manhattan Project, on August 28, 1945. Princeton University Press later published the document under its imprint.
The Smyth report begins with a brief statement surveying advances in nuclear physics between 1896 and 1940. It then describes the technical and administrative history of the Manhattan Project, beginning in the fall of 1941 and ending with the July 16, 1945, New Mexico test. The report describes the decision to develop an atomic bomb for use in World War II, the organization of the Manhattan Engineer District under the leadership of Gen. Groves, the plutonium research and the metallurgical projects at the University of Chicago, and the Du Pont Company's role in constructing the plutonium production facilities.
Henry D. Smyth was the chairman of the Physics Dept. at Princeton University, who prepared a full official report on the Manhattan Project at the direction of Gen. Leslie R. Groves. Died 1986.
