E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. Atomic Energy Division.
E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Company Atomic Energy Division Hanford and Clinton records, 1942-1975.
This material contains general correspondence and notes (1942-1948) documenting the Du Pont Company's involvement with the Hanford and Clinton Works. Included is a history of the Hanford Engineer Works and the TNX project (1944). Also included are notes generated by Robert De Wright, a special assistant at the University of Chicago's Metallurgical Laboratory. These document administrative and technical policies, the decision to loan employees to the University of Chicago, as well as meetings between J. Robert Oppenheimer and Crawford Greenewalt. E.B. Yancey's memoranda (1943-1944) document the process of site selection, land acquisition, construction, and employee relations.
Contracts and related correspondence include correspondence about and proposed revisions to the Du Pont contracts for operating the Hanford and Clinton Works. Included are cost construction estimates, agreements about the loan of Du Pont Company employees, insurance policies, and subcontract agreements.
Administrative records include Design Status Minutes (1943-1945) documenting the design and construction of the Hanford facility. Also included are weekly reports of the Manufacturing Division and safety rules.
Subject correspondence includes information on the Atomic Projects Committee Survey (1948-1950), the Plutonium Chemistry Survey (1947-49), and the Hanford Training Program for Savannah River Plant Employees (1952-53).
Document Control Records - Hanford Liaison reports were generated by the Du Pont Liaison Office at Hanford and are primarily concerned with the handling of visitors and requests for information about the project. This subseries includes an index to many of the Hanford records which were later destroyed.
Du Pont's Atomic Energy Division built and operated the plants at Hanford, Washington, and Savannah River, South Carolina, that produced enriched uranium, plutonium and tritium for the U.S. nuclear program between 1945 and 1989. A more complete history may be found under the main entry (DEHV91-A238).
