E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. Atomic Energy Division.
E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Company Atomic Energy Division engineering records, 1951-1983.
Atomic Energy Division records (AED) letters (1956-1968) contain memoranda and correspondence between reactor designers, engineers, quality control specialists, and construction supervisors which relate to design and construction of the reactors. Much of this material documents work in the separations area (200 buildings). Included are minutes of project design status meetings, engineering and architectural drawings, correspondence relating to the 1950 site survey, reactor studies and associated block diagrams, and records documenting various waste disposal projects.
Administrative files document design and procurement procedures, records management policies, and guidelines for use of subcontractors. Also included are SRP monthly progress reports, weekly activity reports and reports of the Field Design Group (1957-1962). Correspondence concerns reactor fabrication and operations, instrumentation and safety. There are also letters concerning operations at Hanford and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Congressional investigation and labor relations records document 1951 hearings before the House Appropriations Committee and the Joint (House and Senate) Committee on Atomic Energy. These hearings looked into issues of personnel administration and radioactive waste disposal.
DPE reports (1957-1978) are the serially numbered reports generated by the Du Pont Company's Engineering Department which describe work at the Savannah River Plant. These reports document the design of the power components and heavy water test reactors, metallurgical research, and development, and various problems associated with radioactive waste disposal.
Site reports describe the process of site selection. Included are records of the Army Corps of Engineers which were generated during 1950-52 investigation of the Savannah River site. These materials analyzed soil foundation, water flow, erosion problems, and possible approaches to new road construction.
Construction Division records include memoranda and correspondence relating to the Atomic Energy Commission contract and related subcontracts.
Du Pont's Atomic Energy Division built and operated the Savannah River Plant near Aiken, S.C., to produce plutonium and tritium for the U.S. nuclear program. The plant was constructed between 1949 and 1955 and operated by Du Pont until March 31, 1989, when it was turned over to the Westinghouse Corporation. A more complete history may be found under the main entry (DEHV91-A238).
