Correspondence and manuscripts. Correspondence, both personal and professional, consists of all drafts of letters by Richardson with enclosures sent to approximately 600 recipients and all mail he received from approximately 3,500 correspondents. Almost all the Nobel laureates in physics before 1950 are represented in this collection. Manuscripts include notes, revisions, and publications by Richardson as well as papers by his colleagues. Topics of the collection include quantum and electron theory, electrical conductivity of metals, Richardson's law on the effect of heat on the interaction between electricity and matter, thermionic phenomenon, and the application of physics to the development of radio, telephony, television, and x-ray technology. Also contains non-scientific work by Richardson, Lady Richardson's correspondence, and correspondence between third parties.
