Van de Graaff; career with the Physics Department and the Radiation Laboratory of the University of California, Berkeley, and relationship with Ernest O. Lawrence and J. Robert Oppenheimer; World War II research on radar, sonar and the automic bomb; postwar development of accelerators; and receipt of the Nobel prize in 1951.
