Chiefly speeches and articles on aerospace research, together with related correspondence and notes, mainly 1941-65, and pocket notebooks (1954-65), secretary's notebooks (1958-65), appointment books (1952-65), and photos, documenting Dryden's career with the National Bureau of Standards, National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, and National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
Ph.D. (1920) in physics and mathematics, Johns Hopkins University. National Bureau of Standards Division of Mechanics and Sound (1918-47), the Natilonal Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) committee member (1921-46) and Director (1947-58), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Deputy Administrator (1958-65). Research included air turbulence, the boundary layer and the development of wind tunnel research. He was one of the founders of the Institute of Aeronautical Sciences (later part of AIAS), active in the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM), and editor of Applied Mechanics Review and the Journal of the Aeronautical Sciences.
